Author Interview with Kristine Mason of Shadow of Perception

The Simple Things in Life is pleased to have Kristine stop by for an interview today,

1. What made you want to be a writer?

I began writing after my first son was born. I was used to working, to being on the go, but then I found myself stuck in the house with a newborn. Don’t get me wrong. I loved being home with my son, and don’t regret making the decision to be a stay-at-home mom. I just needed…something. I wasn’t quite sure what that something was or what to do with myself in between feedings and diaper changes. I did read a ton of books during that time. I’d go to the library and bring home ten plus books and read through them in a matter of a few weeks. While I enjoyed reading, I started growing frustrated because I was looking for a certain type of book. That’s when I decided that if I couldn’t find what I was looking for, then maybe I’d write it. I fell in love with writing dark, edgy romantic suspense. I also love writing contemporary romances—these types of books are certainly a nice break from writing murder and mayhem!

2. Who is your favorite author?

This is a tough question. I honestly don’t have one favorite author. Over the years I’ve read so many books, by so many different authors—I’m to the point where I can only remember a few of those authors and even fewer titles. I suppose that’s kind of a lame answer, so I’ll give a few authors (this is an eclectic list) whose books I enjoy reading: Lisa Kleypas, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Stephen King, Jeffery Deaver and Dean Koontz.  I am open to new authors, traditional or self-published. If a cover and story blurb entices me, I’m willing to take a chance on that new author.

3. What is the name of the last book you read?

Ten Days by Olivia Mayfield. Like I mentioned, I’m open to new authors. Because I enjoy a sci-fi premise now and then, I picked up this book and wasn’t disappointed.

4. Tell us about yourself in 3 words?
Loyal, control-freak, dreamer

5. What is your favorite activity?
I love being outside—gardening, taking the baby and dogs on long walks, and golfing with my husband and sons.

6. If your book could be made into a movie? Which actors would you have play the main two characters?

Gerard Butler as the hero and maybe Jennifer Connelly or Olivia Wilde for the heroine.

7. Who is your favorite character in your book?

I know I should be gushing over my sexy hero, but I love my bad guy. I put a lot of thought into every character, but when you’re writing suspense I think it’s important to give the villain just as much attention, if not more. When you have a bad guy, there has to be strong, believable motivation for his/her actions. There’s nothing worse than reading a suspense/thriller/mystery and having an unfounded, over the top villain. So, when I wrote my bad guy for Shadow of Perception, I needed to make sure he would be unforgettable. I hope I’ve achieved that!

8. What's in your TBR (to be read) pile?

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
True by Erin McCarthy
Damaged by HM Ward
Praying for Sleep by Jeffery Deaver

9. What are 3 of your pet peeves?
Lying, bragging and chewing with your mouth open.

10. What's your favorite (cats or dogs), (coffee or tea), and what's your favorite food?

I’m a dog person, who prefers coffee (decaf, please) but is more of a Diet Coke lover and believes cheesecake should have its own food group.
Kristine will be awarding $5 Amazon gift cards to six randomly drawn commenters during the tour as well as print books to ten other randomly drawn commenters during the tour. Five will be of Pick Me, a contemporary romance; and a gnome will come with the five copies of Shadow of Danger, book one of the suspense series. [US ONLY on the books].

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good had come from writing it. I realized my passion, and had found a career that I love.

When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.

Excerpt One:

Bad Guy’s POV:

The alarm on his watch beeped, reminding him what he’d already known. His patient would be waking soon, and by the low moan from the other room, he would have to act fast before the bastard regained full consciousness. Sure, he’d strapped the man down, but he didn’t want to miss the look on the shithead’s face when his eyes fluttered open, only to discover he’d just woken up in hell.

As he was about to exit the office, though, shame suddenly clouded his judgment. What he’d spent seven long years preparing for went beyond immoral and had his conscience battling with his anger and need for revenge. Sweat coated his skin and trickled down his back. His heart quickened and his head grew dizzy with the onslaught of a panic attack. Until he glanced at the letter he had framed and hung on the wall. The final contact he would ever have from his beloved daughter. While he’d memorized Eliza’s words, each bold and bubbly stroke of her script, he honed in on one line in particular for encouragement.

Make them listen, Daddy.

Another moan, this time even louder, filtered into the office. His head cleared, his heart slowed to normal, and an eerie calm settled over him.

“They’ll do more than listen, baby,” he whispered, rage suddenly sweeping away any thoughts of immorality or ethics or principles. Screw those things. Screw those quacks who had destroyed his daughter’s life.

Without hesitation he left the office and entered the main section of the thirty-by-fifty steel garage. He hadn’t needed the entire space and had chosen to fulfill his plans in the west corner of the building, where the lighting was best and the bathroom and utility sink were closest. Things would become messy after all.
