Author Interview with Susan C. Muller of The Witch on Twisted Oak

The Simple Things in Life had the pleasure of interviewing Susan,

  1. What made you want to be a writer?
I’ve been an avid reader since I was six years old. I tried to write my first book when I was eleven. Later, life got in the way and I didn’t try again until my husband retired. Those of you who have retired husbands will understand exactly what I mean.

  1. Who is your favorite author?

My favorite author is whoever I’m reading when you ask. I love John Sandford, Lee Child, Robert Crais, and Jim Butcher, or any author who chases killers and blows things up. But I also love Kristan Higgins, Christie Craig, and Shauna Allen. Some days you just need a good romance.

  1. What is the name of the last book you read?

I just finished Death Without Company, by Craig Johnson. If you are a fan on the Longmire series on television, these are the books that started it all.

  1. Tell us about yourself in 3 words?

Stubborn. Adventurous. Inquisitive.

  1. What is your favorite activity?
I love to travel. I’ll go anywhere, any time. I just returned from a trip to Venezuela where I hiked through the rainforest to Angel Falls then slept outdoors in a hammock. This was a gift I gave myself to celebrate my seventieth birthday.

  1. If your book could be made into a movie? Which actors would you have play the main two characters?

I know lots of authors find a photo of a model or actor and tape it to their computer while writing. I’m not good at that type of thing. I prefer to leave more to the imagination. However, since my hero, Ruben Marquez, is a 6’8” former football playing Hispanic guy. I might have to go with the Lee Child method. Since his Jack Reacher character was over seven feet tall, he said forget trying to make him look as described in the book, find someone with the right attitude. They used Tom Cruise.

  1. Who is your favorite character in your book?
I love Ruben. I like the way he tries to project a macho image while struggling to find his place in life. I love how he claims his big family annoys him, yet he’s the first to show up if someone is in trouble. Tessa teases him by saying, “Big, macho cop with a gun and a badge. Yet little kids dogs, and housewives walk all over you.” Mostly, I love the way he learns to accept himself by the end of the book.

  1. What's in your TBR ( to be read) pile?

My TBR pile is so tall it’s in danger of toppling over and causing real damage. At the top are: The Redeemer,by Jo Nesbo, Death, Taxes, and a French Manicure, by Diane Kelly, and Hit Me, by Lawrence Block. You might say I’m an eclectic reader.

  1. What are 3 of your pet peeves?

Rude, inconsiderate, or bigoted people.

  1. What's your favorite ( cats or dogs), ( coffee or tea), and what's your favorite food?

I’ve had both dogs and cats all my life, usually more than one at a time. When my black lab died a few months ago, I swore I was finished with pets. Two months later a friend called and said she was moving, would I consider taking her five year-old border collie-sheltie mix. I agreed to take the dog for a week to see if we were a good match. Three days later, I called her and said not to worry about that one week thing. Maggie had a new home.

As for coffee or tea, I’m not allowed to drink caffeine, so they’re both just warm brown stuff to me.

Now, with favorite foods, you’re got my attention. I’m from Texas, so naturally chicken-fried steak tops my list, followed closely by ribs and pecan pie. The one healthy thing I really like is green beans and I’ve recently discovered they can be fried.

Here’s an excerpt from The Witch on Twisted Oak. It shows Ruben dealing with his mother.

Ruben watched as a uniformed officer crossed the lawn. “There’s a woman over here that’s demanding I let her through. Says she’s Detective Marquez’s mother.”

Adam glanced at Ruben and grinned. “I told her to stay put. Maybe you’ll have better luck.”

“Tell her I’ll be right there,” Just what every detective needed; his mother involved in one of his cases.

“Bring me up to date fast. I won’t be able to put her off for long.”

Adam checked his spiral. “The victim’s only lived here a month, maybe less. Looks like she was some type of psychic. ”

“Not a very good one if she didn’t see this coming.” How long had it been since he’d dropped by the house? No more than two weeks. He hadn’t noticed anything strange and Mamacita hadn’t complained.

“Ruben,” a determined voice called from across the yard.

“Go,” Adam said. “There’s nothing we can do here until the techies finish.”

Even Adam wasn’t brave enough to cross Mamacita.

    1. Thanks, Mary. I was happy that day. It was my first book signing. I've volunteered at a local hospital for almost thirty years and they set up the signing in their gift shop. I was worried no one would come and I'd feel like an idiot, but plenty of people came. Even some of the doctors bought a book. It truly warmed my heart.
