Author Interview: Marianne Morea of Hollow's End

I had the pleasure of chatting with Marianne of Hollow's End

1. What made you want to be a writer?

I’ve always been in love with words. From as far back as middle school, I found that painting with words felt natural and right. I had journals upon journals of dreams and thoughts and snippets of stories, but I never thought it would become a career. I always thought I’d go to law school, especially since I have a flare for the dramatic! As it turned out I became a journalist and then got my masters in fine art for graphic design. But as everything in life, things come full circle and now I’m writing full time. But that’s karma for you…

2. Who is your favorite author?

That’s a hard question to answer since I read so many cross genres. I love Phillipa Gregory, Anne Rice, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Kim Harrison, but I also love Stephen King, J.K. Rowling and Nancy Holder as well as Jane Austin and Charlotte Bronte… I just love to read. If a story line catches my attention I’ll read it.

3. What is the name of the last book you read

Phillipa Gregory’s The White Princess. I’ve read her entire series about the 100 year War of the Roses…

4. Tell us about yourself in 3 words?

Determined, Loyal and Loving.

5. What is your favorite activity?

I love to travel. If I had a million dollars I would travel everywhere I’ve ever wanted to go. I’m lucky, I’ve been quite a few places already, but I would plan a trip every three months if I could and give my kids the world to explore.

6. If your book could be made into a movie? Which actors would you have play the main two characters?

That’s hard because in Hollow’s End my characters are teenagers. Hmmm…let’s see. I think Logan Lerman from Percy Jackson would make a good Hunter and either Alexandra Daddario (also from Percy Jackson) or Selena Gomez, for Rowen. Tyler is a bad boy, so maybe William Mosely (from Narnia).

7. What's in your TBR ( to be read) pile?

**Laughing**… I don’t have many books that linger on my TBR list because I read so much! I just finished Phillipa Gregory’s The White Princess. I have always been the kind of person who devours books. My husband bought me one of the first Kindles available simply because every time we travelled, I would take at least five books with me. It’s funny, I had the pleasure of meeting Sherrilyn Kenyon last year at Anne Rice;s UndeadCon, and she and I spoke about reading while writing such. She said that her advice to authors is that they should read, read, and read so more. I’ve always believed that, so to hear her say it made me feel like I was doing something right—although I don’t read while I am in the middle of writing a book. It’s too distracting.

8. What are 3 of your pet peeves?

*Mean-spirited sarcasm. I’ve written my main characters with strong personalities, and some of their interaction can be snarky, but I NEVER have them use their humor at someone else’s expense. That’s what I am referring to when I say mean-spirited. There’s witty banter, and then there’s using humor to get a laugh while showing no regard for someone else’s feelings. I don’t care how clever you think it makes you, that kind of sarcastic humor only showcases a lack of feeling and a selfish, immature nature. Mean is mean, even hidden behind laughter.

* My kid’s clothes. I know it shouldn’t matter as long as they are clean and appropriate for the weather, but I can’t help it…their shirts, pants and shoes have to go together or I get crazy. Before school started this year my son wanted a pair of neon orange sneakers. He bought them with his own money so I couldn’t say anything, yet I have dubbed them “The shoes you can see from Mars.” To show you how nuts I get, I then proceeded to go to Old Navy and get him tees and polos that had orange accents. Crazy lady? Yup. ;)

*I hate when boys wear their pants down around their butt crack. As a mom, to me it just looks sloppy and smacks of having no intelligence…like you don’t know how to dress yourself.

About the Author:
I'm a New Yorker, born and bred, and for the most part my stories and my characters embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, I use my experiences from around the world in all my books. There isn't a place my characters live or travel to that I haven't been myself.
Like most authors, my love affair with the written word started as a child with the books I read. Even today, I love to read almost as much as I love to write. My favorite stories are the ones that transport me, that bring me to places and introduce me to characters that leave me breathless...the ones that spark the fire of my imagination, allowing me to dream in the world of 'what if?'

I've always been a scribbler, and from the time I could write my name I've been making up stories. So it was no surprise when I earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, I decided to do what I love most full time. Write.

In the meantime I am also a founding member and former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre...and when I'm not 'bichok' (but in a chair hands on keyboard), I'm spending time with my husband and our three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places ...for inspiration, of course!
