Author Interview: Paula Altenburg of Black Widow Demon

Today we are talking with Paula of Black Widow Demon

1. What made you want to be a writer?

I never wanted to be a writer. It looked hard. (And it is!) I wanted to be a reader. But I had all of these ideas in my head. The first few times I tried writing them down, I gave up in frustration. Along with being lazy, however, I’m also persistent. One thing led to another, and my family kept encouraging me to stick with it. I have the best family ever. Also, my favorite teacher in high school (English) once told me he’d read anything I wrote. You can’t imagine how encouraging that can be, or how much praise from someone you admire sticks with you when you have little niggly doubts lighting fires in the back of your head. Teachers really do make a difference.

2. Who is your favorite author?

The one who makes me the most jealous is George R.R. Martin. The one I buy without hesitation is Madeline Hunter. I LOVE Madeline Hunter. I hope she lifts that restraining order someday.

3. What is the name of the last book you read?

Bound by Night, by Larissa Ione.

4. Tell us about yourself in 3 words?

Lazy. Impatient. Introvert.

5. What is your favorite activity?

Watching movies. I also like watching the complete series of TV shows on NetFlix. I rarely watch television because I’m an instant gratification kind of girl and following a show every week isn’t for me. I like marathon sessions. I need to know what happens next!!! Writing a series makes me feel guilty for that reason, because as a reader, I hate having to wait for the next book, too. (Hurry up, George. I’m getting impatient.) Confession—as a teenager I wouldn’t read a series unless the books were standalone or the series was finished. Then my brother-in-law got me hooked on Thieves’ World, the gift that kept on giving.

6. If your book could be made into a movie? Which actors would you have play the main two characters?

This is a tough one because I always want Hugh Jackman to be my leading man. Blade is totally not Hugh Jackman.

Christian Bale could be Blade, perhaps. He does the dark, anti-social thing well. Kate Beckinsale (especially her Underworld character) would make an awesome Raven.

7. Who is your favorite character in your book?

Blade. I love a dark, dangerous man you can rely on but who scares the crap out of everyone else. You could cut through dark alleys at three in the morning with this guy.

8. What's in your TBR ( to be read) pile?

· The Great Escape, by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

· Ever After, by Kim Harrison

· The Surrender of Miss Fairbourne, by Madeline Hunter (My apologies, Madeline. I’ve been busy writing and got behind on your releases. Finish that series, though, and I’m going to be all over it in a marathon session of reading.)

9. What are 3 of your pet peeves?

· Blaming others. People need to take ownership without pointing fingers.

· People who waste my time (and/or other people’s time), or who believe their time is in some way more valuable. I don’t care if all I’m doing is sitting and staring at the sky. Perhaps I *need* to be sitting and staring at the sky.

· Artichokes. Seriously. Who thought those were a good thing to grow?

10. What's your favorite ( cats or dogs), ( coffee or tea), and what's your favorite food?

Cats. I love their independence.

Coffee, although my stomach begs to differ.

Potato chips. (I hope you didn’t mean a healthy favorite. I’m a total junk food addict. The rest is just fuel.)

Passionate and headstrong, half-demon Raven is nearly executed on the orders of her fundamentalist stepfather. She escapes from the burning stake using the gifts of her otherworldly heritage and the help of a mortal stranger named Blade. Now she’s set on revenge, and only quiet, intense Blade stands in her way.

A retired assassin weary of the weight of his past, Blade has crossed the desert to seek out a new life. His journey is interrupted when his conscience demands he help Raven find an old friend who can help her. Saving her from her need for revenge and delivering her into the hands of loved ones means he’s one step closer to redemption.

But as Blade’s sense of duty becomes something more and threats, both mortal and immortal, stalk the woman he can’t abandon, he could very well fall back into the life he’s trying so hard to escape.

  2. Hi Paula! Christian Bale would TOTALLY work for Blade! And I'm with you on cats and potato chips (especially the salt/black pepper kettle variety) but what did artichokes ever do to you??
